      I have traced my Hale line back to the 700’s. My GGGGgrandfather is Maj. Samuel Hale. Samuel is brother of Deacon Richard Hale, Nathan Hale’s father.

      Nathan Hale had no direct descendants b/c he had no children. If you are related to his family, it would be through one of his brothers or sisters. The Hale name is very common in the US, and you’d probably have to hire a genealogist to trace your lineage.

      I also have family “Hale” who live in Palo Alto, CA. My father, and his father, and my Grand father’s brother were all twins.

      Their names are Johnathan Wade Hale, Herman Lloyd Hale, Horace Hale, to start…not included, my father and his twin brother’s name.

      Hope to hear something soon. The dates that I go back to so far are, 1901, 1931, 1928, to start.

    I am a descendant of the Hale family and have managed to trace the Hale family all the way back to England 1200 a.d. but going back that far I found their was still many holes because of lacking records, most records I found where old church records with births and deaths. Also an interesting note I found one trace that leads to the Hale family having a connection to the Mayflower, but I am not sure on how reliable It is.

      Have you checked Hale, House, and Related Families? Many libraries and genealogy societies have copies. I believe Robert Hale was the founder of this branch, and he did not come over on the Mayflower.

        Your are incorrect about Robert Hale being the founder of the branch, if you look hard enough you can trace the Hale family back much further on both of Nathan Hales parents. The farther back you go though the Hale name does end up changing. Now when I traced the family tree back I found the names of the family that did come over to America, and I did find a name that matches a passenger on the Mayflower and the time frame does match, but I am not sure if its the same person or not, it could just be a common name that they shared, but like I said the time frame makes it a possibility but im still looking into it.

    Check out the Hale family association. I am a member and am from Robert, Samuel, John ,making Nathan my 1st cousin 6 times removed. My maternal line is also Hale, with Robert, John, Samuel, Samuel Jr. etc. I believe that Robert Hale came to Charlestown MA around 1630 as part of the great migration. John was the first minister in Beverly MA, his home is part of the historical society there.

      May I ask how you obtained your information? My grandmother married into the Hale family but I haven’t been able to trace back the connection. Unfortunately, no one is alive anymore to get the facts from.

      • I have the entire family tree for the Hales from Nathan Hale all the way to the present day children that were born decedents as recent as 2011. Our family has personally updated them through the years in our personal records book with all documentations and letters that we have had throughout the years. I am related to Nathan Hale, I also have all the documentation of our relationship to the American writer and editor Sarah Josepha Hale who is related to Nathan Hale and wrote “Mary Had A Little Lamb.” If anyone would like information I would be more then happy if you contact me to look over specific members in the family. My family holds a lot of heirlooms from the Hale family along with some other family belongings from other influential people in the family genealogy tree and to whom they married. If you are ever interested in getting more information I would be happy to help.

    My Grandmother is Dorothy Hale. She was born in Newport, RI; I guess around 1925 or so. I have always been told she was a decendent of the Hale family. How do I find out for sure?

      Kevin, your grandmother is undoubtedly descended from one of the branches of the Hale family, but there were 5 of those branches in Connecticut alone. The best source I know of in print is Hale, House, and Related Families, and most larger libraries have a copy. Good luck in your search!

    Could the Mayflower Hale/HALL/Haule have lost one or several of their Mass. sons to Rhode Island due to a disagreemnt with Religion tenents? Our HALL family lore states these HALL men may have come from Rhode Island to Virginia then into North Carolina and Tennessee. I am not satisfied with what I have found during seven years of 8 hrs per day searching for anything that may bring the parents of our William R Hall to light. Thanks for anything you may be able to offer………..any site/s etc.

      Hales comprise a huge family. There were 5 different branches in CT alone during the early days. If you can trace back your 20th century genealogy, you might make a start on the earlier records,

  37. I am the pres. of the Westhampton, MA historical society and have learned quite a bit about the patriot Nathan Hale’s brother Enoch, and his descendants. Enoch and Nathan attended Yale together, graduated together. When Nathan disappeared in N.Y., Enoch went looking for him. Enoch remained in Westhampton all his life and is buried here. His son, Nathan, went on to become the editor of the Boston Daily Advertiser and was the father of, among others, Edward Everett Hale. Another of Enoch’s sons, Richard, married a Rust girl from town. Their son was named Enoch Hale. He went on to become a well known physician in Boston, working to establish the Lying In Hospital for Indigent Women (later became Brigham & Women’s Hospital).         Yes, I have read it. I am familiar with and have begun to transcribe Enoch’s diary as excerpted by Sylvester Judd. One mention is having received Nathan’s belongings, including a bolt of cloth from which Enoch had some shirts made (in Northampton, MA). I am in touch with a great granddaughter of Edward Everett Hale. Her grandmother donated her Hale papers to Smith College’s archives. I gave Nancy a tour of our town, the church where Enoch had preached, the cemetery, etc. I’m sure she would also enjoy a tour the next time she comes “north.” Thank you so much for your offer. I hope to see you in 2013.

  39. My Grandfather, Russell Hale Archerd was the sun of Ardella Hale and Elmer Archerd. Ardella was the daughter of A. Delbert Hale and her grandfather possibly had the same name. Ardella’s father was born 7 Sep 1851 in St Joseph,MI, married Sarah Mariah Irons in 1873 and died 1 Dec 1931 in Salem,Marion,OR. We have always believed him to be descended from Nathan Hale’s family and would appreciate any information connecting the generations.

    My Name is Herbert Thomas Hale, I’ve traced my family to Batesville Arkansas and also into Tenn. there is a book at the Batesville Arkansas Museum in Independence County that claims my 3rd Great Grandfather, Dr. William PA Hail is the Great grand nephew of Nathan Hale and I need supporting documents. Please Help ,,,,,,,
    I know the change in spelling is helping make this harder. And my Genealogist, believes, although all records indicate Richard, Nathans brother who perished in Caribbean did in fact have a son, where everything states only daughters. Please help….

      Regretfully, I have not been able to find a William among the descendants of Nathan’s siblings. I’m not a certified genealogist, but have used this book to help trace Hale family relatives, having worked at Hale Homestead in Coventry CT for many years. I’m curious about your genealogist’s belief that Richard had a son. I’ve never seen any documentation of that; what is the documentation that underlies that belief. Has the genealogist traced back William H. P.’s lineage? Looks like it’s only 3 generations away from Nathan and his sibs. The Hale family in CT has many branches, and many of the members are closely interrelated.
