What’s in a (last) name?

I’ve been intrigued by people’s last names ever since I learned that they all mean something. Many last names are derived from the trade or occupation that an ancestor once held,  a place near which an ancestor lived, or a physical trait an ancestor had. Examples:
Carter – driver of a cart
Cooper – barrel maker
Smith – [...]
